    The reason why we put these to together is that "A dark room of my mind" was the first demo we sent to magazines, but we included "When gates are opening" on the promo-CD as well. Most of the reviews are on the language they where written in at the first time.

    Sometimes I whish I had my own label so I could signe outstanding bands because if it were up to me, these swedes would be signed immediatly. It's great to hear bands in the present day
who still hold fast the flame of old school times, composing and playing from the heart and
soul. Hard rocking power/speed metallers VII Gates are doing just that with these two demo
recordings. Both come packed with excellent musicianship despite not so great production
(makes it more old school, vinyl days sounding which gets no complaints from me!). With
Maiden:esgue/Priest:ish riffs and unique vocals that are standing on their own and, of course
plenty of speed metal greantess there is a lot to like about his band. Think of the classics
like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Rainbow or Queensr˙che... If you like those then VII Gates
would be a band for you to check out. My only cricism is towards the copule slow slow songs
on here that I can't get into at all and find that some of the lyrics are "cheesy" for lack of
a better word. Killer band whom I hope gets signed because they deserve it. Outstanding song:

Tombstone (www.tombstone.gr)
    A CD which features both demos of the band that arrived by mail, from a power or true metal band, whatever you prefer. A band that's not bad at all, but still needs a lot of work in order to make it. They have interesting song structures, with some clever twists and some unusual patterns, but unfortunatley this is not applying to all the songs in the album. There are a few rather typical metal songs (mainly the first six songs) which is rather disappointing, since it's obvious that they do have the required talent. The singer has a decent voice and the good thing is that he knows his capabilities and he is not trying to sing stuff that doesn't fits him.
    This might sound like he is limiting their sound, but he is not. There are some cool riffs, and the band is tight enough. The music is not very technical, but what really spoils the fan is the bad production. It's too low and not that clear or heavy. But this is something they can actually improve given the appropriate resources, as is their songwriting. They can write good songs, and they probably need to work more on their ideas. They have certainly improved on their second demo, but they still need work. 6/10

Burrn! (translated)
    VII Gates is the band of Sweden which has the hard gay type singer who made up Rob Halford at the time of the first stage of the 80:s from the end of the 70:s (I don't know truely wether he is gay). Their heavy metal set centering around the vocalist of metalic vocal quality which resembled Rob Halford for a while when he was young. However sound quality is bad, although music is collected very much into catch - and performance is also good. If it is heard to a good sound, what the impression will become good is trustworthy.

Metal Mayhem (ADROMM) (hem.passagen.se/freeze)
    Halmstadslokaliserade VII Gates kommer här med en andra demo, enligt uppgift på begäran från något skivbolag. Det känns som om demon spelats in under tidspress. Ljudet är något urvattnat och låtarna framstår därför inte riktigt så riviga som de borde vara.
    Jämfört med förra demon så låter det mindre tyskt om A Dark Room Of My Mind. Om Det är medvetet eller inte vet jag inte, men jag välkomnar det. Nu låter det snarare som ett mer polerat Accept och stundtals som ett något mjukare Manowar.
    Gossarna har knåpat ihop ett par rediga metalstänkare den här gången. Riffen smeker öronen skönt, även om det tunna soundet inte riktigt gör dem eller låtarna maximal rättvisa. Ett fläskigare ljud på kompgitarrerna skulle tillföra mycket.
    Det sjöngs entonigt och småklent redan på den förra demon, men det funkade trots allt ändå. Det gör det inte den här gången. Nu låter det inte bara klent utan också ansträngt och rakt skitnödigt. Det sänker intrycket. Ska VII Gates kontrakteras är jag rädd att det krävs en rejäl uppryckning på den fronten. Fick de sedan också bara lite bättre ljudförutsättningar skulle de nog bli ett band att räkna med, för låtmässigt är detta ett steg i rätt riktning. [2.5/5] Per-Ola Nilsson

Metal Mayhem (WGAO) (hem.passagen.se/freeze)
    Från Halmstad kommer VII Gates, som precis har färdigställt sin första demo, When Gates Are Opening. Skivan innehåller fem låtar, fyra metaldängor och en ballad. Med hjälp av mina detektivredskap lyckas jag spåra influenserna till band som Iron Maiden, Judas Priest och Running Wild. Resultatet av detta blir ett sound som påminner en hel del om Crystal Eyes på deras debutalbum.
    Favoriterna bland låtarna blir inledande riffpaketet Under The Crossed Bones och avslutande galopphästen The Crusade. Balladen Memory Of A Friend betyder antagligen, åtminstone textmässigt, mycket för bandet, med tanke på att den är tillägnad deras förre basist som gick bort i somras. För en utomstående lyssnare är den dock inget att hänga i julgranen, utan blir istället denna demoskivas svagaste punkt.
    De här grabbarnas spelskicklighet är det inget fel på, sinnet för melodier finns där, och låtmaterialet håller, i alla fall stundtals. Vad som istället brister här är alltför entonig sång, en trummis som ibland låter en aning för återhållsam, och, som för så många andra demoband, brist på originalitet.
    Kan man förbättra ovanstående saker så kan det med all säkerhet bli riktigt intressant sedan. Med tanke på att detta är bandets första demo, kan man säkert hitta en mer personlig stil sedan, och så småningom jobba sig till ett skivkontrakt. Tiden är inte inne ännu, men potentialen finns.

    VII Gates sind eine übliche melodische Metal Band aus Schweden. Mit ihrer aktuellen Demo CD mit 11 ! Tracks übermitteln uns die 5 Jungs ihre Ansichten von gutem Geschmack. Zumindestens hinsichtlich in ihrer instrumentiellen Ausrichtung. Die scheint sich vor allem an alten Dark Tranquillity oder auch In Flames zu orientieren. Gesanglich fügt sich der vor allem recht melodisch, in höheren Gesangsebenen gehaltene, Gesang eher der Power-Schiene zu. Das Ganze mag zwar alleinig gesehen recht gut rüberkommen. Gesang und Instrumentierung will mir aber bei VII Gates einfach nicht gefallen. Das beißt sich, und zwar ziemlich stark. Das passt einfach nicht zusammen. Man kennt, dass die Einflüsse des Sängers mehr bei Halloween und Gamma Ray liegen. Die Einflüsse der restlichen Bandmitglieder scheinen aber, meiner Ansicht nach, ganz wo anders zu liegen. Ich tippe hier mal stark auf die schwedische Melodic Death Szene. Naja, wie dem auch sei. Gut spielen können die Jungs, gut singen kann der Sänger. Hoffentlich können sie sich mal auf einen gemeinsamen Stil einigen, denn das Potential ist bei VII Gates auf alle Fälle da.... (Soulsister / 03.05.2002)
