Metal Invader
The Swedish newcomers VII GATES have decided with their first work to become a major name.
Right from the start they show what they are and what they want to play. Pure melodic
heavy metal with one step at the 80s and I mean at bands like DEMON, DIAMOND HEAD, IRON
MAIDEN and with the other at the new Swedish melodic heavy metal bands TAD MOROSE, MORGANA
LE FAY and CANDLEMASS of the Thomas Vickstrom era. Excellent twin or triple guitar work,
well-played and studied songs and most of all-powerful yet melodic deliverance. Along at
their musical journey we find Chris Amott (ARCH ENEMY), Kee Marcello (EUROPE), Tommy
Denander (RADIOACTIVE), Janne Stark (LOCOMOTIVE BREATH), Stefan Ingelstrand (TIME
REQUIEM). So what we have here is a real metal delight, for all those that loved the DEMON
albums of the “Don’t break the circle “ era, along with some heavier
moments, a real metal diamond that deserves to get discovered. If there is any God this
band has to become a big one. Just make yourself a favor and listen to this album now,
this is an order. (5.5/6)
proGGnosis
It felt really refreshing listening to this album for the first time. I experienced it
like an overwhelming trip back in time, but with today’s techniques on mind.
The Swedish band VII Gates seems to have a task to fulfill. And that task is to remind us
all that good-old Heavy Metal still lives, and can sound as good as in the old days!
So Fire, Walk with Me is an immensely interesting album, especially for those who
nostalgically remind the 80’s melodic Heavy Metal. The close reminiscences with that
era are too obvious in VII Gates music: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Running Wild and
Helloween (Keeper of the 7 keys era) are the most recognizable influences, though this
Swedish band stands also very much on its own.
The music here, purely categorized as Melodic Heavy Metal (a true fitting clothing),
intentionally depends on the old leanings, but then it offers a renewed and re-factored
sound, especially by the thoughtful add of keyboards, which makes them sound very
contemporary. Maybe if this album would have been released back in late 80’s, it
wouldn’t have as much consideration as it rightfully deserves nowadays, for the sole
reason they use keyboards, which, at the time was considered a true sacrilege in Heavy
Metal circles.
There is an inner power that bursts out of each and every track, while the band strives to
deliver mildly technical Metal with only but a few approaches to more complex structures,
close enough to today’s Progressive Metal outfits, especially those of German and
Scandinavian Power-Prog Metal bands.
If Under the Crossed Bones reminds me of the pirate stories so well told by Running Wild,
the pseudo-ballad So Far Away and the powerful Tormented are much closer to Helloween, as
Love Ballet and A Dark Room of my Mind do so in comparison to Iron Maiden’s first
incarnation with Bruce Dickinson last albums. The final The Madman Inside is perhaps the
most proggy track here, and also one of the most successfully constructed. Just the right
choice to end a winning album.
The intrusion of well thought keyboard parts are, like said, what most separates this
album from being an absolute time-machine back to when the most pure Heavy Metal ruled,
strengthened by world acclaimed bands and albums, with which Fire, Walk with Me
notoriously compete in terms of consistency and quality. I am talking of such works as
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (Iron Maiden), Keeper of the Seven Keys, part II (Helloween),
Melissa (Mercyful Fate) or Turbo (Judas Priest).
All in all, here we have a real quality album for the traditional Heavy Metal aficionados,
with loads of powerful riffs, well mixed in melodic venues and occasional more elaborated
structures that can be of real interest to Prog Metal fans. For it’s purpose and
focus, this album really rocks deep and hard.

Kurz vor Weihnachten, der Teig reicht nicht und der kleine Laden von Stephan Svensön ist
drei Kilometer Fussmarsch durch Schnee und klirrende Kälte entfernt – VII GATES
müssen sich was einfallen lassen, um ihren Stollen fertig zu backen. Ihre Lösung: Ein
paar laute Freunde, um trotzdem Stimmung zu machen und ansonsten walzen, walzen, walzen.
Die Freunde heissen Kee Marcello und Chris Amott, ehemalige und aktuelle Streiter bei
EUROPE und ARCH ENEMY, und sie haben ihre Slash T-Shirts an und ein paar olle Karamellen
der Marke „Axl und Co.“ aus der demokratischen Republik China mitgebracht, deren
übermässiger Konsum zu endlosen Soli, viertelstündigen Balladen mit Konzeptualvideo und
einer Stimme wie ein angestochener Eber führt. Bevor man sich bei Truthahn, Rotkraut und
–wein die Kante gibt, wird erstmal ein wenig im Proberaum gelärmt, ganz
unverbindlich, ganz ungezwungen. Nach einem milden Warming-Up mit „Bounded by
Fate“, gibt es ein paar typische Rocker, Sänger Criss Blackburn zeigt, was er (noch)
kann und der Rest der Truppe bolzt solide vor sich hin, die ersten Bierflaschen werden
geknackt und ab und an sieht auch mal einer nach dem Ofen. Ein Joint macht die Runde und
mit der zarten, doch gleichzeitig muskulösen Ballade „So far away“ zeigt die
Band ihre Schokoladenseite, während draussen der Dezemberregen gegen die Scheiben
klatscht. Danach wird geht es härter zur Sache, die Gitarren wüten und schreddern, man
rempelt sich gegenseitig an, irgendjemand blökt „Saxon!“. Der Stollen ist
inzwischen schon gut braun, doch sie Stimmung stimmt und so drischt man für „Like a
Rock“ und „The Madman inside“ nochmal in die Saiten und Felle, epische,
nicht endenwollende Tracks mit ständigem Stop and Go, die nicht drei, sondern sieben
Minuten pro Nase dauern. So ist das eben, wenn man sich völlig in der Musik verliert, man
hat Zeit und das Ganze ist schliesslich nicht zum Verkauf bestimmt. Dann ist die Luft ein
wenig raus, man nimmt das Tape aus dem Aufnahmegerät und begibt sich zu Tisch, die Korken
knallen, das hat mal wieder Spass gemacht. Richtig derbe. Man klopft sich auf die
Schulter, grölt und schreit, der heitere Teil des Abends beginnt. Irgendwann, es ist
still und dunkel geworden und nur noch die allerhärtesten sind wach, kommt einer der
Jungs in die Küche und entdeckt ein stinkendes schwarzes Brikett im Ofen, das noch immer
leicht brennt. Er nimmt es heraus und läuft damit ins Wohnzimmer. „Fire walk with
me!“ ruft einer, „Guter Titel für unsere nächste Platte!“ ein anderer.
Alle lachen, man stösst ein letztes Mal an, dann tut der Alkohol seine Wirkung.
Am nächsten Morgen kommt der Mitarbeiter der Plattenfirma, um das Master für das
Presswerk mitzunehmen. Alle pennen noch, doch auf dem Schreibtisch liegt ein Tape mit der
Aufschrift „Unser neuster Knaller: Fire walk with me“. Mit einem süfisanten
Lächeln lässt er die Cassette in sein Hemd gleiten.
